The Grey Earl

Jon Bishop, aka The Grey Earl, is an illustrator, theatre maker, and full time tea drinker, who works from his studio, set on the fringe of the trees in the very sunny town of Callander. Working with traditional materials when drawing, he has a pretty impressive pencil crayon collection, though also enjoys the odd bit of digital media in some of his more elaborate pieces.

He has created a collection of gifts and greetings cards over the last 6 years, which feature across the UK. These include Batboy, Stars are Braw, Party Animals and most recently, the satirical Ask Donald, which all continue to grow, when the odd idea pops up.

His work has featured at The National Gallery (Edinburgh, 2015), as part of the Picture Hooks exhibition and in solo shows at North Edinburgh Arts (2014) and Platform (Easterhouse, 2016). The illustrations hold a distinct sense of humour that both children and adults warm to, a feeling he carries over into community art workshops, which have featured at many festivals, venues and events across Scotland, including, The Edinburgh Fringe, Glasgow Commonwealth Games, Doune the Rabbit Hole, Solas Festival and Tramway.

Working as Co-collaborator in children's Theatre company The Letter J, Jon has assisted in the visual and musical creation of Grandad and Me and is currently working on Winter Wonders, a joint production with Cumbernauld Theatre, which will run from 8th – 23rd December this year.

He drinks his tea white, no sugar and likes his biscuits hard and crumbly.
